Phil Ivey has been labeled as the best poker competitor in the world by many of the top pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before reaching the age of 1. His grandpa taught him one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was addicted to poker and wanted to pickup whatever he could about poker. Phil routinely would tell his parents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil didn’t let the detrimental comments from other people destroy his dream of becoming one of the greatest poker players in the world.
Phil began competing intently after acquiring a false ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his techniques at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The first number of years for Phil were a teaching period and coming away with a win wasn’t a common outcome at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he made two final tables and won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the closing table he defeated many of the well known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his game to the next level and moved out west to Sin City. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his success to discipline and a continuing passion for the game of poker. He states that he’s learning every day and is very humble about his success. Phil knows he makes mistakes every single session of poker and always aspires to improve.
Despite the fact that Ivey has won some large tournaments, he likes winning money games on a regular basis.
