Phil Ivey has been branded as the greatest poker competitor in the world by quite a few of the top-ranked professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather taught Phil one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup whatever he possibly could about poker. He would tell his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t permit the adverse comments from other people kill his dream of becoming one of the greatest poker competitors on the planet.
Phil started playing intently after getting a false ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his abilities at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The initial few years for him were a teaching period and winning wasn’t a regular thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP where he made 2 final tables and came away with his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the closing table he destroyed a number of the better known pros which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Vegas. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to hard work and an undying love for poker. Phil states that he is picking up skills every day and is incredibly humble about his accomplishments. He admits to making blunders every single game of poker and constantly aspires to get better.
Despite the fact that Ivey has come first in some big-time tournaments, he likes destroying cash games on a regular basis.
