Phil Ivey has been referred to as the best poker player on the planet by most of the top-ranked pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before reaching turning one. His grandfather taught Phil one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup every little thing he could about poker. He routinely would tell his elders that he was planning on being a professional poker player. He did not allow the adverse comments from others destroy his dream of being one of the strongest poker competitors in the world.
Phil began competing seriously after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his techniques at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for him were a teaching experience and winning was not a regular thing at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved two final tables and came away with his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the final table he defeated quite a few of the better known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Ivey credits his achievements to hard work and an undying passion for poker. Phil states that he’s picking up skills every single day and is very abashed about his accomplishments. Phil admits to making blunders in each game of poker and constantly aspires to improve.
Although Phil has won some big tournaments, he likes destroying cash games on a normal basis.
