Phil Ivey has been labeled as the number one poker contender on the planet by quite a few of the top professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before reaching the age of one. His grandpa introduced him to penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to learn whatever he could about poker. Phil routinely told his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not allow the negative feedback from others kill his dream of being one of the best poker players on the planet.
Phil started playing seriously after acquiring a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his abilities at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for Phil were a learning period and winning was not a common thing at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he made 2 final tables and came away with his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the final table he destroyed many of the well known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Sin City. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to discipline and an immeasurable passion for the game of poker. Phil states that he is picking up skills every day and is incredibly humble about his success. Phil knows he makes mistakes every single session of poker and constantly strives to get better.
Despite the fact that Ivey has come first in some large tournaments, he likes winning cash games on a regular basis.
