Phil Ivey has been referred to as the greatest poker contender in the world by many of the top pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before his first birthday. His grandpa taught him penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wished to discover everything he possibly could about the game. He routinely told his elders that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He didn’t permit the negative feedback from others kill his dream of becoming one of the best poker players on the planet.
Phil began playing seriously after getting a false ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his techniques at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for Phil were a learning experience and winning was not a normal thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he made two final tables and won his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the closing table he destroyed a number of the well known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his game to the successive level and moved out west to Vegas. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his success to discipline and a continuing passion for the game of poker. Phil states that he’s learning every day and is quite abashed about his accomplishments. He knows he makes mistakes in each session of poker and always strives to improve.
Despite the fact that Ivey has won some large tournaments, he favors destroying money games on a normal basis.
